Prepare Your Home for Bushfire Season

Taking simple, proactive steps can significantly reduce the risk to your home during a bushfire.

  • Reduce flammable materials
Keep the area around your home, sheds, and structures clear of combustible items. Avoid stacking firewood or storing materials directly against buildings.

  • Maintain clean gutters
Regularly clear leaves and debris from gutters to prevent ignition from embers. Installing gutter guard mesh can help reduce build-up.

  • Keep roof spaces clear
Prevent animals such as possums and birds from nesting in your roof, as nesting materials can be highly flammable.

  • Prepare gutters and downpipes
When a bushfire is approaching, block downpipes (using gutter plugs or weighted tennis balls) and fill gutters with water. This helps reduce the chance of embers entering the roof cavity.

  • Clear underfloor areas
Remove stored items and debris from under the house. This improves airflow, helps keep the area cooler, and reduces places where embers can ignite.

  • Install and maintain smoke alarms
Ensure you have working photoelectric smoke alarms installed. Test them regularly and replace batteries at the start of daylight saving. If you have older ionisation alarms, consider upgrading to photoelectric models for improved safety.
