Recreational drone use is permitted on many Central Coast beaches, however operators must comply with the Australian drone safety rules set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
Key rules include:
Drones must not be flown higher than 120 metres above ground level
Drones must stay at least 30 metres away from people
Drones cannot be flown over groups of people or crowded beaches
Flights must remain within visual line of sight
Drones may only be flown during daylight hours
Operators must respect privacy and avoid creating hazards to people, wildlife, or aircraft.
Busy beaches and parks are generally considered “populous areas” under CASA rules and are not suitable for recreational drone flying.
Some locations may also have additional restrictions relating to National Parks and Council-managed land. It is recommended that drone users check local conditions and restrictions before flying.
Central Coast Council also uses specialised drones for coastal monitoring and beach management.
