Pipes, porridge and a champion — the Pearly Spurtle was a cracking success!

What a way to start a festival! The Gosford City Pipe Band kicked off the inaugural Pearly Spurtle – Festival of Porridge in spectacular style, leading a parade of hundreds of smiling people around Pearl Beach.
With the pipes ringing out through the village and the crowd following behind, it was the perfect start to a day that was all about fun, community and a little bit of Scottish spirit.
And then, of course, there was the porridge!
Fifteen contestants took on the challenge, with an impressive nine of the 15 either from Pearl Beach or having family connections to the village. There was plenty of stirring, tasting, creativity and good-natured competition as contestants battled it out for Pearly Spurtle glory.
The Creative Porridge title went to Rachel Visontay, while Robert Reid took out the Traditional Porridge competition.
But Robert wasn't finished there. His combined scores from the Traditional and Creative competitions saw him crowned the Overall Pearly Spurtle Champion.
Robert has a particularly special Pearl Beach connection, with his parents-in-law living in Amethyst Avenue. Now he has an even bigger challenge ahead — Robert will represent Pearl Beach and Australia at the Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships in Carrbridge, Scotland, this October.
A judging panel worthy of a Spurtle
The competition was judged by an impressive panel. Caroline Velik, a previous Golden Spurtle winner, brought her expert porridge knowledge to the judging table. She was joined by Karen McPherson, a renowned Scottish chef based in Sydney, and our very own Scottish Mayor, Lawrie McKinna.
With that calibre of judging, winning the Pearly Spurtle was no small achievement!
A day full of fun
From the opening pipes to the final spoonful, the day was packed with entertainment, laughter and community spirit.
There was music, dancing, porridge, plenty of competitive stirring and lots of fun for everyone. The parade led by Gosford City Pipe Band was an absolute highlight, with hundreds of people smiling, following the band and enjoying the spectacle.
A huge thank you to all 15 contestants, our judges, Gosford City Pipe Band, performers, volunteers, sponsors and everyone who helped make Australia's first Pearly Spurtle such a success.
Most of all, thank you to the hundreds of people who came along and embraced the event. You helped turn a quirky idea about porridge and a spurtle into a wonderful Pearl Beach community celebration.

The Pearly Spurtle may be over, but the excitement continues. You can cheer Robert on via YouTube at 8.30pm on Saturday, October 3, when he competes in the first heat of the Golden Spurtle in Scotland.
